Southwater were just one-wicket away from securing their first-ever Sussex League victory on Saturday.
They had to make do with a draw away at Hellingly after failing to claim their host’s final wicket as they closed with 164-9.
Having won the toss and opted to bat, Southwater hit 253-8 in 52 overs to set their hosts a tough chase.
Openers Matt Lacy (49) and Nick Baker (52) put on 82 for the first wicket, while Andy Carvell added 36 and Danny Humphreys topscored with an unbeaten 63 from 51 deliveries.
In reply, the hosts struggled from the off and Daniel Skett quickly dismissed both opening batsmen.
Steve Hook added 52 and Greg Devlin 27, but as the wickets fell, Daniel Pellett finished with 27 not out, while number 11 Chris Morris survived 14 balls.
Southwater, who host Keymer & Hassock on Saturday, sit seventh in Division 4 after taking 14 points from the draw.
