Charman wants Horsham to find ugly side

The Hornets lost 2-1 on a heavy pitch against Redhill on Tuesday night, throwing away an early lead after Tony Nwachuku had put them ahead from the penalty spot.

“It was a poor game, no real football was played at all on an awful pitch, I was a bit surprised the game went ahead because even finding somewhere to warm up was difficult,” Charman said.

“But over the next month or so the players are going to be be playing in poor conditions twice a week because we’ve had such bad weather, so we are going to have to learn how to win ugly.

“We did it at Walton & Hersham on a poor pitch in our last game and we should have done it again at Redhill. The quality we’ve got we should be able to break down sides like those.”

“But I saw how much the result hurt them and I’m sure they’ll bounce back on Saturday.”

Charman blamed defensive errors for both Redhill’s game, the first a Glen Woodburn own goal, heading over his goalkeeper Michael Hunter, before poor marking allowed Matt Robinson a free header to snatch a late winner.

“It was a case of two defensive errors, one in the first half and one in the second half which cost us” Charman said.

“Our wide players both did well in the first half, Tony and Billy (Dunn). I had a bit of a pop at them at half-time but in the second half we went deeper and deeper and were our own worst enemies.

“But we didn’t deserve to lose the game. We had the better of the first half, they edged it in the second but I would have been unhappy with just a draw, so I’m extremely unhappy with losing.

“It’s a shame because we’ve been working very hard in training and picked up clean sheets in our last two games, but yesterday we gifted them their goals.”

Horsham host Hythe Town on Saturday at Gorings Mead. The sides shared a 1-1 draw in the reverse fixture earlier in the season and Charman is targeting a return to winning ways.
