Horsham group raised vital charity funds in 1992

Secrecy shrouded a fundraiser held by Southwater and District Lions Club.

A handpicked team of Lions made their way to Deal in Kent where they ‘kidnapped’ Cliff Critchett, the district governor for the South East region of the Lions organisation.

The mock kidnap saw Cliff and his wife Jan held to ransom as the Lions took them round various Lions fundraising events.

They raised £2,500 from the 50 Lions Clubs contacted.

In the same year, the Horsham Lioness Club welcomed Judy Gilmore, chairman of the West Sussex branch of the Hearing Dog Society, Cathleen Edwards and her hearing dog Honey.

They were presented with a check for £2,500, enough to train one dog.

Elsewhere Horsham Sparrows football team triumphed at the Southwater and District Lions soccer tournament.

Meanwhile Edith Ireland celebrated her 95th birthday with the evacuees she gave a home to during World War Two.

Edith was delighted to see Barbara Martin and Margaret Briscoe, the evacuees she kept in touch with for 50 years. Barbara travelled from Cornwall and Margaret from Surrey.
