LETTER: Waste figures kept mounting

I would suggest Pam Rands of Billingshurst (letters December 8) doesn’t hold her breath waiting for someone in HDC departing or even apologising after the Waste Management debacle.

After visits abroad by councillors to see how the scheme was run we had plenty of hype from them but after the consultants indicated a 70 per cent unavoidable overspend it made me query how you can budget for something and then find you have a 70 per cent overspend.

The excuse was that it was due to ‘unforeseen and unavoidable items’. There were quite a lot of questions raised by various councillors as to who was responsible for checking budgets but it appeared we did not have the right people to run our business. The type of excuse given would not be acceptable in the commercial world and it is unlikely anyone concerned with the fiasco would still be employed.

And now the much heralded side loading vehicles are ‘not the right ones’, so apart from not checking finances it appears due diligence wasn’t done on the overall performance of the vehicles. We know Mr Dawe doesn’t want consultation on the sudden change but it seems odd he wants to revert to something that in 2009/2010 was considered unsafe due to backloading.

No one, except Mr Nye, has gone and it is unlikely anyone will.
