Like many people in Horsham and Southwater I am attempting to move from the status of a couch potato to being able to run 5k, accomplished (hopefully!) by a gradual increase in the time spent running week by week.
I am aided in this sweaty and exhausting endeavour by two things: first, the anticipation of what it will feel like to actually succeed, and second, the volunteers who run up and down the line of beginners, encouraging and urging us on.
Theirs is a powerful testimony to jogging as a way to get fit; many of them started out like me, overweight and totally sedentary, so when they say ‘If I can do it, so can you!’ I choose to believe them.
In church we celebrate Easter, aware that the Christian faith eventually transitioned from being a ‘seeing is believing’ reality into the acceptance of a proclaimed faith.
The disciple Thomas famously summed up the mood of would-be believers in saying he would not believe until he saw Jesus for himself.
In response, Jesus said that blessing would come to those who believe even though they hadn’t seen Him.
Over time, Christians testified that though they had not themselves seen Jesus quite like the first disciples did, still they knew the power of the risen Christ in them. ‘Try this for yourself - it works! Jesus is alive!’ they said. And more and more people did, and still do.
It is for the joy that lies before us that Christians seek to run the race of faith, fitting ourselves for the Kingdom of God, and pressing on into all that is to come!
