Here is a copy of my open letter to Jeremy Quin MP:
I am writing to you today to ask you to take a stand for my future and the future of other young people in Horsham.
Together with many of my peers, I was devastated by the outcome of the EU referendum. I studied at Millais School, which as a language college promoted links with other European countries; leaving the EU jeopardises both that ideal and - on a practical level - the unrestricted travel that fostered the development of those links. I would like young people in my area to grow up with the same opportunities that I had.
Leaving the EU also threatens my future employment and study opportunities. Without the EU, I would not have my current job, which is based in Germany. Without the EU, my hopes of pursuing further study and a career in academia will be seriously hindered by reduced access to funding and international scholarly cooperation. Several of my peers, fearing that they will be unable to find employment in a post-EU UK, are already considering leaving the country, contributing to a local and national drain on the qualified workforce.
Please speak for me and others like me. The result of the referendum is not legally binding and it is still possible to oppose the country’s departure from the EU. If that fails, we still hope that you can delay Article 50 being invoked and concern make our concerns heard. We fear for our future.
I hope that you will reply to this message and make a clear statement of your position on these important matters.
