I have to question whether your reviewer Amanda Wilkins was actually in the audience for the performance of Madame Butterfly at the Congress Theatre. I was.
Butterfly was very good and most of the cast more than adequate. The awful exception was Pinkerton.
I do not recognise the reviewer’s description (favourite tenor, stealing every woman’s heart, better than ever, etc). Much of the time he failed to sing in tune or sustain a note properly. It was a relief when he was off stage.
He may have looked good and acted reasonably but in opera it’s the voice that counts.
My opinion was shared by a considerable portion of the audience which boo-ed him, loud enough to be heard by Pinkerton himself who passed it off with a deprecating shrug. He certainly never stole my heart.
