LETTER: Cost outweighs any benefits

Following recent letters on the cost of our EU membership, it is interesting that economist Roger Bootle reports in his book ‘The Trouble with the Europe’, that in 2004 the EU itself estimated business regulation costs at around £500 billion pa.

In another book, the ‘Great European Rip-Off’ by David Craig, the author estimates the total cost to Britain of the EU, to be £118 billion a year. Surely that far outweighs any benefit obtainable from being in the Customs Union, particularly since our exports to the Single Market (as a percentage) have been in decline for many years.
