LETTER: Attack by a sparrow hawk

I feel I must write in reply to the letter from Katie Way of Broadbridge Heath regarding seeing a sparrow hawk in her garden.

A few weeks ago I heard a commotion in my garden and on looking out I saw a sparrow hawk trying to fly off, dragging a pigeon by his wing.

I made a noise to make him drop it. I looked out a few minutes later to see the pigeon huddled close to a fence. It obviously was in shock so I didn’t go too close but when I went out ten minutes later I saw that the sparrow hawk had come back and beheaded it.

I picked it up and put it in a bag to dispose of it. I wasn’t giving the sparrow hawk the satisfaction of eating it even if it was dead. It didn’t make my morning.
