Development problems

I NOTE with concern the County Times report (April 5) which breaks the news of likely job losses at the RSPCA headquarters in Southwater. As one of the very few sizeable employers in the village this is bad news indeed.

I wonder if the strategic planning department at Horsham District Council has noted it? It is important that it does because it highlights one of the major problems with the proposed Berkeley’s development in Southwater.

Very few of the potential new residents brought into the village by any such development will work in the village. The development itself, as currently proposed, does not create employment. Everyone will have to leave the area and travel elsewhere to work by car since there are no practical rail links.

By any measure or definition no such development can be called ‘sustainable’. It is time the council acknowledged this.
