It’s that time of year again, the annual winter sick bug is back, and this time it has come with a vengeance.
No doubt you are thinking that it is time to bar the windows and doors and avoid any contact with the outside world for the next two months. But is that really the answer?
Contrary to popular belief, Kenneth Wright, director of the Sleep and Chronobiology Laboratory at the University of Colorado, has revealed that trapping ourselves inside during winter to avoid illness, can actually have the opposite effect. According to Wright, gentle, daily exposure to fresh air and the sun’s rays helps to calibrate the body ‘clock,’ which regulates appetite, mood, energy and sleep and is “critical to good health.”
As well as this, and despite the common misperception, eating dairy in regulated doses can actually help to increase digestive immunity. As Ian Marber, a nutritionist at The Food Doctor, states, “live yoghurt helps replace the lactobacillus, the healthy bacteria in the gut,” which helps to prevent illness.
Finally, if you are suffering from the norovirus it may be worth looking into taking a zinc supplement which has been proven to help reduce the duration of illness.
