I was amused at Mr and Mrs Davies’ surprise at encountering a grass snake.
Many years ago I dug a reasonably-sized pond in our back garden. Now, 50-odd years later, in my retirement I get a great deal of pleasure in watching the wildlife that this pond attracts.
At this time of year a constant visitor is a grass snake which swims around or basks on the weed.
It is an elegant creature some four feet or more in length and may well be an offspring of a visitor from a previous year.
It is an almost daily attraction that I look forward to each year. I am sure that he takes the odd goldfish, as does the occasional heron, but my fish breed so rapidly that I do not begrudge them their treat.
