Young man rescued from Tilgate Lake after he tried to retrieve ball

A young man was pulled out of Tilgate Lake after he waded in to the water to retrieve a ball.

The man aged in his 20s swallowed some water during the incident yesterday (Tuesday April 5), but was not seriously hurt.

A spokesperson for SECAmb (South East Coast Ambulance Service) said: “Thankfully it wasn’t as serious as we initially thought it could be.”

He was pulled out of the lake prior to the arrival of paramedics by one or two other people, who were also checked over at the scene by ambulance staff.

Emergency services were called to Tilgate Park at about 1.50pm.

An ambulance and vehicles from HART (Hazardous Area Response Team) were sent to the scene.

The spokesperson said: “One other person or two other people went in to try to help. They were ok but cold and checked at the scene.

“He was fully conscious but required a hospital check, so after being treated at the scene he was taken to East Surrey Hospital.”
