The first football fixtures of 2016 have taken a hit today with prolonged rain decimating the schedule.

The derby at Plaistow Road between Loxwood and Horsham in the Premier Division was postponed after a pitch inspection at 11.30pm.

Horsham YMCA’s game with local rivals Broadbridge Heath at Gorings Mead has also been called off

Hassock’s home game with Newhaven passed an initial inspection, but was postponed at 1pm, while the leaders Eastbourne Town’s game at The Saffrons against AFC Uckfield Town was also off.

Only four games in all three divisions beat the elements, three of those were Pagham versus Arundel, Shoreham’s game at Middle Road against St Francis Rangers and Lancing clash at Culver Road due on the 3G surface.

Anyone looking for a local rugby fix, then Horsham’s London 2 South East game with Crowborough, which was scheduled to be played away, has been switched back to Coolhurst.

Kick-off is 2pm.

Back to football, all eight games in Division 1 of the SCFL have been postponed - Steyning Town’s clash at Midhurst was one of the first to be axed early this morning.

All but one of the fixtures in Division 2 have been called off. These include local fixtures between AFC Roffey and Billingshurst, Cowfold and Rottingdean Village, Alfold and AFC Varndeanians, as well as Roffey’s match at Upper Beeding.

The only match in the division that has passed a pitch inspection is Montpelier Villa’s game at Falmer against Hurstpierpoint.
