The Independent Visitor Scheme pairs volunteers with those living away from their parents and supports them to take part in activities they both enjoy.

Dependent on the child’s age, interests, and needs an independent visitor could spend time enjoying an activity with them, ranging from playing football in the park to simply talking over a cup of tea.

West Sussex County Council is inviting anyone interested to attend one of two library information evenings being held in August.

David, from Worthing, has recently become an independent visitor to a teenage boy in foster care. He said: “Having only just started, I can already see how rewarding it is to be someone who genuinely listens to what he is saying.

“What is so nice is that both of us will benefit from our time together.”

The first information event is at Worthing Library in Richmond Road on Tuesday August 11 and the second at Bognor Regis Library in London Road on Thursday August 27. Both events start at 6.30pm with refreshments from 6pm.

Volunteers from a variety of backgrounds are needed to meet the needs of children and young people accessing the Independent Visitor Scheme.

Full training is offered to volunteers and they will be fully supported by the Independent Visitor Scheme coordinator, while expenses are also paid.
