The small shop located on Steyning’s High Street, launched in February 1990, has been run by loyal volunteers who are celebrating hitting the £1.5million mark this year.

Cancer Research UK area manager for West Sussex said: “This is incredible for such a small store in a quiet location.

“It is staffed by lovely and loyal volunteers, some of whom have been there since it first opened.”

Natalie Howell has been the shop manager for six years, the 39-year-old said the news was ‘wonderful’.

“It’s great, the volunteers have done brilliantly,” she said.

“We have our regulars in Steyning who visit the shop everyday. Many of them know people who have died of cancer or have had cancer themselves.”

But with less people volunteering their services in the last few years, Mrs Howell is concerned that the shop will struggle in the future.

“We only have around 10 volunteers at the moment and not many young ones. We’re desperate for more people.”

Cancer Research UK shops have raised a total of £20 million in 2012/3, but research is an expensive business .
