The investment is part of Network Rail’s commitment to provide additional capacity across the network to meet the increasing demand placed by a continuing rise in passenger numbers.

Passengers using Littlehaven will benefit from longer, wider platforms which will help to reduce congestion in peak hours. Motorists and pedestrians will benefit from less barrier down time on the nearby level crossing as trains using Littlehaven will no longer stop over the road while they are in the station.

Tim Robinson, Network Rail’s route managing director for Sussex, said: “Station facilities across the route are being improved as part of our commitment to provide passengers with a better network and additional capacity to meet demand. The station will remain open throughout the work and we will continue to liaise with Southern to minimise any disruption. The outcome will be a much-improved station which better meets the needs of today’s passengers.”

Mark Stuchbury Southern’s head of major programmes, said: “We very much welcome this investment in Littlehaven station where passenger numbers are increasing.

“The longer platforms will provide more capacity at the station and they will accommodate eight-coach trains so passengers will be able to get on and off them more easily, helping to keep services on time. We are also working with Network Rail on plans to improve the waiting facilities and passenger information systems at the station.”

As well as platform replacement and extensions, access ramps will also be rebuilt and lighting, signage, passenger information systems and waiting shelters will be upgraded.

The platform extensions will be constructed first and brought into use later this year. The existing platform sections are due to be demolished and rebuilt in early 2014. The station will remain fully operational during the works.
