Radical plans to devolve powers over trading hours to major towns and cities are expected to be unveiled in tomorrow’s (Wednesday July 8) Budget 2015.

In the biggest shake-up of Sunday trading laws since the 1990s, Chancellor George Osborne wants to allow mayors and councils to determine for themselves what the rules should be in their areas.

Most Horsham shoppers have supported the announcement.

Commenting on the County Times Facebook page Nick Costin said: “Shops and other businesses should have the freedom to open for trade whenever they want.

“Obviously issues regarding late night noise and public nuisance need be taken into account but otherwise let them open when they want.

“Removal of the Sunday restrictions would stimulate growth in the economy and create extra employment opportunities.

“It is now the 21st century! These archaic and unnecessary Sunday trading restrictions have no place in modern society.”

Catriona Findlay agreed: “Fab idea. Supermarkets should be 24/7. Not everyone is 9-5 Monday to Friday. Scotland already has 24/7 on all supermarkets.”

Lana Baker added: “Yes. I’m a care worker and sometimes Sunday is my only day. Even when it’s not shops are shut by the time I finish.”

However others have not been so keen on the idea.

Teresa Mason said: “Why do shops need to open on Sunday at all. It is a shame that it was let happen in the first place.”

Chriss Webb agreed: “People just need to be more organised and shop when the shops are open. If you forget something, tough!”

Carole Parsons added: “NOOOOOOO!”
