South East Coast Ambulance Service said paramedics checked over a child, man and woman at the scene.

Surrey Fire and Rescue Service crews were dispatched to deal with reports of smoke coming from one of the cars.

Firefighters were stood down, however, after Surrey Police and the Highways Agency confirmed there was no fire and nobody was trapped in the vehicles.

Motorist faced delays after one lane was closed and a matrix speed limit sign was set to 50mph between Junction 9 (Gatwick) and Junction 7 (M25).

Congestion was reported in Junction 10 (Crawley A2011).
