UPDATE: A24 victim was teenage girl, say police

The motorist who died on the A24 at Southwater yesterday afternoon (Wednesday July 24) was an 19-year-old woman from Godalming, police have confirmed.

Officers are appealing for witnesses after members of the public reported seeing a car on fire in a ditch just north of the Buck Barn crossroads.

Emergency services were called to the scene at 4.05pm.

In a statement released this morning, Sussex Police confirmed: “The driver, a 19-year-old from Godalming, was the only occupant of the vehicle and she sadly died at the scene.”

Sergeant Rob Baldwin from the Road Policing Unit said: “The woman tragically died when her car, a silver Ford Focus, left the road. We need to establish what happened and want to speak with anybody who witnessed the collision.

“The road was closed for just over five hours. I would like to thank motorists for their patience and understanding whilst the investigation and recovery work took place.”
