EMERGENCY services went to the southbound M23 at Crawley near Junction 10 at 5.40am today (Thursday) after a van overturned and was then struck a glancing blow by a passing lorry carrying a crane.
The two occupants of the van got out unaided and did not initially appear to be suffering major injury but were taken to East Surrey Hospital at Redhill. The lorry driver was unhurt.
The Highways Agency closed the southbound carriageway south of Junction 9 for Gatwick while the crash was dealt with.
There was a tailback on the southbound M23 back to Junction 9, and pressure on surrounding roads, as a result of the crash.
However the outside lane was re-opened by 7.30am and the other lane by 8.30am.
