The Air Ambulance was called along with the South East Coast Ambulance Service which sent a paramedic car and an ambulance to the scene.

She was flown to St George’s Hospital in South London to be treated for serious injuries, officers said.

A spokesman for Sussex Police told the Observer today: “The toddler is in a stable condition.”

There are no suspicious circumstances but police are working to establish what happened, the spokesman added.

Neighbour Louise Halliday wrote on the Observer Facebook page: “I heard the ambulances and could see something happening from the back of our house but never dreamed it would be something like this.

“I really pray this little one makes a full recovery.”

Another neighbour described the incident as the ‘worst thing she had ever seen’.
