On a sunny Sunday afternoon, local schools, youth groups, sports clubs and organisations plus three teams with disabilities, totalling 29 in all, attended the main pool at The Pavilions in the Park and swum their hearts out in four sessions of 55 minutes at Horsham Lions fifth Swimarathon.

The atmosphere at poolside on March 13 was electric when members of the Horsham Lions, sponsors and families encouraged their teams to swim as many lengths as they could in the allotted time. Between 1pm and 5pm the teams provided pledges totaling £6.780.44 having swum 3,211 lengths of the 25 meter pool, or 53.52 metric miles

This year, the Horsham Lions charities are The Horsham Butterfly Project and The Hop Skip and Jump Centre.

Clare Wilson, president of Horsham Lions, said: “This has once again been a fantastic event with the highest number of teams entering this year. I welcomed a good number of new teams as well as regular teams who have entered once again. Horsham Lions were delighted to have teams entering from both of the chosen local charities. Once again, this year, we had an entry by The Sunbeam Swimming Club for The Disabled as well as two teams from “The Silverlining”, which are partly made up of adults who have suffered the effects of brain damage. They are a real inspiration to us all. The teams have so far pledged the highest ever amount in the five years. I would also like to thank Sarah Brockhurst and Richard James, the respective Managers of Hop Skip and Jump Centre and The Butterfly Project, plus their teams who have given us wonderful, support since last September, particularly with publicity. Richard and Sarah, thank you for giving up your time to support the event and for helping out presenting the medals to the teams. Finally a very big thank you to all the teams and their sponsors that have not only supported Horsham Lions Club but also our community we all serve.”

Both Sarah Brockhurst and Richard James wished to thank Horsham Lions for putting on this event to help their local organisations and the Horsham Community and they both hope this partnership with Horsham Lions can continue in the future.
