Jeremy, aged 17, has been playing the piano since the age of six and has achieved Licentiate Diploma level (ABRSM post grade 8). He is also a grade 8 flute player and last term, became the principal flute player in the School’s Symphony Orchestra.

Jeremy said: “It felt great to receive recognition for the hard work I have put into practising the pieces, and it was also exciting to be chosen among so many talented candidates.

“My family background isn’t particularly musical but my parents enjoy listening to classical music and I was encouraged to take up the piano at a young age.

“I enjoy the diversity of music at Christ’s Hospital. I have met people who are good at jazz improvisation, pop singing, or composition and this has widened my horizon in learning music and inspires different aspects of my playing. I am currently still deciding on whether to take a Performance Diploma at a music conservatoire or study English Literature at a university.”

The West Sussex Youth Music Awards is organised by The Regis School of Music. This year’s adjudicators were Adam Barker, assistant head at West Sussex Music and musician Terence Allbright.

The competition is open to students under 18 from schools across West Sussex who aspire to further their musical studies at college or university.
