Research from the TaxPayers’ Alliance shows British taxpayers contributed £270,233 to the investment in video games last year alone.

Mike Glennon, opposition leader on West Sussex County Council and UKIP county councillor for Lancing, said: “The examples of British taxpayers’ money being used to fund fatuous EU initiatives are seemingly endless. In this instance it is to fund video games.

“In effect we have no influence, our money is simply taken and our EU membership costs a net £66m daily. Meanwhile the EU dictates 75 per cent of our laws and inflicts uncontrolled immigration on this island.

“The British people will have the opportunity next year in a referendum to return this country to a position of sovereign independence, where we make our own decisions, rather than existing as a mere vassal province of the European super-state.

“If we do not vote to leave the EU, then surely we will deserve everything we get in future - and one thing is certain, the EU will impose its will further and further on member countries until they no longer exist.”

Four games - Arena World, Duels, Cosmic Top Secret Experience and Your Kingdom Come - were each awarded more than £100,000 by the EU last year.

Jonathan Isaby, chief executive of the TaxPayers’ Alliance, said: “Taxpayers will be furious that Brussels bureaucrats seem to have no regard for the value of taxpayers’ money.

“At a time when there are serious issues across the continent, the EU’s focus should be on solving real-life problems rather than splashing the cash on made-up ones. Those responsible for approving this spending must be held accountable.”
