A tour of the Meissen Porcelain Factory was the highlight for 34 members of Storrington Decorative and Fine Arts Society’s recent stay in Dresden.

After a film introduction, we were guided through rooms where the talented craftspeople demonstrated the production stages and their skills were explained. Our guide then showed us the exquisite pieces on display in their museum.

Dresden old town was full of surprises. Despite its vast destruction much has been preserved or reconstructed. The beautiful baroque Frauenkirche church in its centre is probably the most famous symbol but visits were also made to the Zwinger Palace with its superb collection of Old Masters Art and Meissen porcelain and to the New Green Vault housing a priceless collection of fine gold, silver and jewellery. Members were dazzled by the unique 41 carat green diamond set in a white diamond surround.
