The Nine Lessons and Carols by Candlelight service at St Nicholas Church at 6pm sees the culmination of a year-long project for the year-ten students.

The church organises the annual competition with the school, challenging students to design and make a candle holder that can actually be used in services.

The Rev John Challis said: “The challenge is set in January each year and then the children go to work. They can use any materials from copper, wood, plastics, etc. The idea is that this is a live project.

“All too often, children are asked to make something that is without commercial value but in this project, I am a client who needs candle holders and they must undertake research, perhaps visit the church, research the project and make a product for me to judge whether it is suitable.

Alan Sugar eat you heart out because along with the school, we also pay!”

“The top prize is £40 Amazon vouchers, then £20 for second and third, and finally, because the candle holders are so good, we also pay a £10 runner up.

“This year’s examples were just like last year’s and the year before and the year before, and by that I mean they were amazing!

“The students really get the idea and put a lot of work into the process. I love this project as it runs all year but culminates in the parish of Beeding and Bramber with Botolphs using these candle holders.”

Machis Baboulene won first prize, with Alice Brookshaw second, Lauren Corrall third and Jack Bland as runner-up.
