The group of 12 (plus two leaders) set out to raise money to distribute care packages to the homeless. They also videoed the sleepout, to document their experiences and help them to raise awareness of homelessness in Horsham and elsewhere in West Sussex.

A statement from the group said: “First of all, we created our ‘care packages’ (reusable bags filled with items homeless people may have to go without, such as hygiene products, gloves, Vaseline etc).

“Then we had a talk from a Samaritans minister who helps homeless people with basic needs such as tents, and also helps them get the support they need.

“Afterwards, we had a visit from Horsham MP Jeremy Quin. He talked to us about what can be done/ is being done in government to aid the homeless. We then all had to sit alone for an hour, to simulate the loneliness and isolation homeless people often face.

“Finally, we slept with no heating or lighting, and the doors open to simulate the outdoors. Our whole group has learnt a lot from the experience, and we are currently just making our film.”
