Castlewood Primary School pupil Jacob Carey learnt about the struggle that turtles have with breeding due to plastic on the beaches and in the sea last June.

He was so moved by the turtle’s plight that he investigated further and found out about seagulls removing plastics from bins and depositing them in the sea.

As a result, Jacob wrote to Jeremy Quin about the issue.Mr Quin was so impressed by Jacob’s letter that he decided to visit him at the school.

Rachel Nunns, headteacher at Castlewood Primary School, said: “I am delighted that our teaching motivated a pupil to contact the local Member of Parliament about a subject he felt so passionately about.

“Hopefully, Jacob’s enthusiasm will move others to take action.”

During his visit, the MP met headteacher Rachel Nunns and they had the opportunity to discuss a range of current pertinent topics: budgets, the state of school funding and the crisis affecting schools, the growth of Southwater and the local admissions policy.

Following a tour of the school, he met Jacob Carey and his peers in their classroom, and then Mr Quin joined the children on their recently installed Daily Mile Track for a mile’s exercise in the sunshine.

Jacob, aged six, said: “I am going to go to Waitrose in Horsham with Mr Quin in November to look at all the plastic they are using.

“I’m really looking forward to that.”
