Dog walkers spotted a snake trapped down a well in a field off Hampers Lane, Horsham yesterday (Wednesday, August 5).

The RSPCA tried to help the snake out by putting a large branch into the ten foot well that it could climb up.

When this failed to work, the RSPCA tried snake poles, but were unable to grip the snake.

West Sussex Fire and Rescue’s technical rescue unit officers were called to assist and rescued the snake using a large fishing net, which is part of their animal rescue equipment and released it into nearby woods.

A farmer will be filling in the well to prevent any further incidents.
