Screenwriter of Hollywood movie directed by Spielberg to host Q&A in Horsham

Tickets went on sale today (Tuesday November 3) for a screening of ‘Bridge of Spies’ and discussion with writer Matt Charman at the Capitol Theatre on Saturday November 28.

The evening was organised by Jeremy Knight of Horsham Museum, who urged town residents to celebrate Matt’s success at the venue where his first show was performed.

Bridge of Spies, a Cold War thriller directed by the legendary Steven Spielberg, was released in October to critical acclaim.

Jeremy said: “I personally thought Horsham ought to do something about it, and if you don’t ask you don’t get. We ought to celebrate this sort of thing.

“Matt, having gone to local schools, is a well known local person but people haven’t cottoned on that this film has come out.

“When else are you going to get the chance for the script writer of a Hollywood blockbuster to answer your questions about the film you have just seen? It is something people will always remember.”

Matt was born in Crawley and grew up in Southwater. He attended the Forest School and Collyer’s.

His first play, A Night at the Dogs, was shown at the Capitol and was based on a part-time job he had washing cars at a repair garage in Ashington.

Jeremy added: “Giving a multi-million pound film to a bit of an unknown is a bit of a risk.

“All films rely on the script, and that script that Matt wrote appealed to Steven Spielberg.”

Speaking to the County Times last year, Matt described flying to meet Spielberg and discuss his script, and described the experience as a ‘dream’.

New York City’s Museum of Modern Art has named Bridge of Spies as one of the films released this year that is ‘likely to have lasting historical significance’.

The Q&A on Bridge of Spies will be Matt’s second - with the first in New York.

The evening will include a reception, a showing of the film, and the Q&A.

Tickets are on sale at the Capitol and cost £15.
