Rotary Club discuss the referendum at meeting

The forthcoming referendum was the subject of a debate at Billingshurst and District Rotary Club's recent meeting. Normally politics and religion are not discussed but it was felt that this event was important enough.

Guests from Horsham Rotary Club, and others, assembled at the Blacksmiths Arms for a buffet supper before the serious part of the evening. Club president Colin Jenkins made a presentation supporting staying in the EEC, and concentrated on the effects leaving would have on the business world and peace.

Graham Harper had been invited to speak in support of leaving the EEC and showed his concerns for the legal situation and personal freedoms with Corpus Juris, a legal code adopted by Napoleon from Roman Law, as opposed to Habeas Corpus, (which first appeared in the Magna Carter of 1215 and is therefore well established in English Law). Unfortunately he concentrated on an incarceration of a British Citizen in Albania, which in 2014 was recommended as a member of the EU.

When a vote was taken there were seventeen in favour of staying in, ten in favour of leaving, with six undecided.
