Recognition for group of dedicated volunteers

Twenty years ago a group of five determined caring women set up the Billingshurst Macmillan group raising over one million pounds during this whole period.

At the annual Sussex Macmillan Volunteer Rally, held at Cowdrey Park this month, two of the remaining amazing individuals received recognition of their work by being short listed for the Douglas Macmillan Appeal. Jenny Kern (pictured right in the white top) and Pam Goldsmith (pictured far left) both received a certificate and wine for this nomination and also the acknowledgement for the years of service for starting the Billingshurst group and steering it to the huge contribution given each year to the Midhurst Cancer Support Service.

There are now 18 active committee members and Jenny and Pam are both standing down from their positions of Chair and Treasurer (although they never recognised these positions in themselves) but will still be involved in the making of cakes and jams which are sold at all Macmillan events within West Sussex and the Billingshurst area. They will be missed.

However it does not end here as each year Macmillan makes an award to the most successful committees in the country. For the London and South East area, within the top five, were three committees from West Sussex and it was the Billingshurst committee which came out on the top. A success story of commitment and hard work, resulting from a small beginning 20 years ago.
