Pupils take on careers speed dating challenge

Over 260 Year 9 pupils took part in the event which is designed to raise awareness of the different types of careers available to them when they leave school.

Students had the opportunity to network with local business representatives from a number of sectors including banking, childcare, engineering, building, medical, and the Armed Forces.

Over the two sessions, students interviewed business professionals with questions that they prepared in their personal development lessons.

Many students chose to find out more about which career paths and qualifications are needed for particular professions, along with salary and job satisfaction.

Students feedback include ‘I learnt about jobs I didn’t even know existed’, ‘being in the RAF would be fun and keep me fit and ‘being a GP means no two days are the same.’

Regular business representative, Rosie Wyer from the Dame Vera Lynn Children’s Charity, commented: “It’s such a privilege to come to this event and share what I do with students.

“It’s a wonderful opportunity for them to experience the massive variation of careers on offer to them today.”

Reflecting on his first experience of The Weald School Careers Speed Dating, Mr Leigh Chambers, economic development officer from Horsham District Council commented: “This was such an enjoyable event and a fantastic opportunity to inspire the next generation when thinking about their future careers.”

Mrs Sarah Wilson, careers and work experience manager said: “Today has been a big success. Hopefully it has motivated students to explore all options available to them, shown them a wide variety of career paths and started them planning their own future careers.

“A big thank you to everyone that has given up their time so generously to support the students.”

The next highlight in our rolling careers programme is the Future Choices Fair on Wednesday February 10, 6 - 8.30pm, which see a wide range of exhibitors, including local employers Thomas Keatings Ltd, Berkeley Homes, Horsham District Council, Further Education Institutions including Northbrook, Chichester and Central Sussex College and Higher Education Institutions including Universities of Oxford, Brighton and Kent along with The Royal Veterinary College.

Apprenticeship Providers include West Sussex County Council - all come together to provide information and resources to Year 7-13 students.
