The planning application for land north of Melton Drive was set to be debated by Horsham District Council’s Development Control South Committee on Tuesday (December 15), but it was withdrawn from the meeting’s agenda.

A previous application for 102 homes on the same site by Wates Developments was refused by HDC, a decision upheld by the planning inspector in May 2014.

Philip Circus (Con, Chanctonbury) said: “It might be something to do with the fact that the developer feels their chances of success now the Horsham District Planning Framework has been completed and there’s no point in proceeding with an application. If that’s the case it’s extremely good news.”

In the last few years HDC has lost a number of planning appeals across the Horsham district due to a lack of an up to date local plan.

The HDPF was agreed by councillors in November.

The new application had been recommended for refusal by officers on the grounds that it represented an ‘inappropriate, unsustainable and unacceptable’ development outside the built up area of Storrington, and would harm both the landscape of the area and a neighbouring Grade II* listed building.

A total of 122 letters of objection had been received from residents to the original consultation, while HDC had received an additional 44 to the re-advertisement of amended plans.
