The area is the ninth in Sussex to declare this morning, with the majority of voters in Rother, Eastbourne, Crawley, Chichester, Adur, Worthing, and Hastings also backing the leave campaign.

Lewes and Horsham are the only two areas in the county so far to back the remain side.

The turnout in the Horsham district was the highest in Sussex at 81.65 percent, and of those 49 per cent backed leave, compared to 51 per cent voting for remain.

Horsham MP Jeremy Quin said: While Horsham voted to remain, the country as a whole voted to leave the EU. After 40 years the electorate have spoken. It is our job now to deliver the expressed will of the electorate.

“The Government and Parliament must manage that process in a way that reduces the risks, especially economic risks, for the UK.

“As the Prime Minister has stated the role of everyone, including those who backed remain, is to make sure this works to deliver the very best future for our country.”

Michelle Taylor, a remain campaigner from the Horsham district, added: “Well done Horsham district for one of the highest turnouts of 81.6%, and showing a result in favour of remain.

“We did out very best. Now it is down to us to put our nose to the grindstone and work harder to pull ourselves out of the next economic mess.

“Thanks to my team. We worked hard for a remain vote, and we will keep working hard to do our best for our children and country.”
