Residents have been living for five years with heavy vehicles trundling along this lane which is nothing but a lane and was never built for the volume of traffic that has been travelling up and down over these past five years.

“The surface of the road is so damaged that just filling the potholes was not the answer.

“I’m really delighted because it is one of the worst roads in Mid Sussex and at last it’s going to be resurfaced.”

Mrs Jones said the road has been a ‘rat run’ for heavy goods vehicles travelling to two large housing developments close by – the Kings Weald housing site, formerly the Keymer Brick and Tile site, and The Croft.

She said Cants Lane could not be resurfaced until these developments were almost complete.

She thanked residents for their patience: “They have lived with this for five years and have been so patient with the upheaval.”

Mrs Jones said when planning approval was granted for the major Kings Weald housing site – 475 new homes – developer Croudace agreed that adequate local community infrastructure would be provided.

She said the resurfacing of Cants Lane was among this infrastructure to support the new housing east of the town.

Also part of that infrastructure was a new Co-op which opened at the beginning of this year.

Meanwhile, a community centre is under construction and a sports ground will be developed.

Mrs Jones also confirmed that negotiations the Clinical Commissioning Group to provide a new medical centre for the large population to the east of the railway line.

She said the resurfacing of Cants Lane will cause some inconvenience for residents – but there will be access points.

She added: “It is urgent – the county council offices have listened and the work is going to be carried out as soon as possible.”
