An inquiry into alleged mistreatment of detainees at an immigration centre in West Sussex has asked people with a specific interest in the case to come forward.

In 2017, the BBC broadcast an episode of Panorama, which featured undercover footage filmed at Brook House, Gatwick, between April and August of that year.

What was filmed happening at the centre – which was then run by G4S – was so appalling it led to a number of investigations.

At least six members of staff were fired following the programme but no criminal charges were brought.

The current independent inquiry, which is not a criminal investigation, is being chaired by Kate Eves, an independent investigator with over 20 years’ experience in the detention field.

Ms Eves now wants to hear from core participants – people who may have played a direct or significant role in the situation – to come forward.

This includes anyone who was involved with Brook House at the time, who is aware of what happened, has insights into the system and who may have supported or worked with detainees or employees.

Ms Eves said: “Now is the time to come forward – we’re asking anyone who thinks they should have a formal role in the inquiry to tell us.

“We’re also asking any potential witnesses to come forward and share what they know.

“We’re committed to getting to the bottom of what happened in Brook House and we want to encourage people to come forward.

“With the help of core participants and witnesses we will build a clear picture of what happened to help ensure that  future mistreatment can be prevented.”

The closing date for witnesses to come forward is Tuesday May 19.

The aim of the inquiry is to establish the extent of the mistreatment at Brook House, identify those responsible, look into the causes of the abuse and identify any changes needed to make sure it does not happen again.

Anyone who has information that might be of interest to the inquiry, is urged to get in touch either via the free information line: 0800 181 4363 or by email to [email protected]
