The number of new homes completed in 2014/15 was 2,520 up 26 per cent from 2,000 in 2013/14, but this still lagging far behind demand according to the National Housing Federation, which represents non-profit housing associations in the UK.

The number of homes built in Worthing has tripled, from 80 to 240, while housebuilding in the Chichester district also rose sharply from 240 to 410. Adur saw a modest rise from 60 to 70, as did Crawley from 140 to 160.

Although construction only increased slightly in the Horsham district, it accounted for the highest number of homes in both years at 730 and 800 respectively.

The Department for Communities and Local Government did not have complete figures for either the Mid Sussex or Arun districts.

The NHF says that West Sussex fell 2,071 homes short of its housing need in 2014/15.

Alistair Smyth, external affairs manager for the South East at the National Housing Federation, said: “We have a far reaching housing crisis and at its heart is the reality that not nearly enough homes have been built for a generation or more.

“We need urgent action to get more housing of all types built in the South East. Families and young people across the country are crying out for genuinely affordable homes they can rent long term and shared ownership homes to help them on the housing ladder.

“Housing associations are building, but they need a bold government to play its part too and lead the way for new homes. Our new Government has committed to end the housing crisis within a generation, now it must free up land and provide proper investment to make that happen.”

According to the NHF across England, in the four years 2011 to 2014, the total shortfall against the need for new homes totalled 515,340.
