The owners of Calcot Farm, in Horsham Road, were granted retrospective permission for a change of use of land from farm yard to an area to store logs, woodchip and mulsh.

But a separate bid for retrospective permission to use a farm building for meat cutting, chilling and storage of meat was deferred by Horsham District Council’s Development Control South Committee on Tuesday.

Councillors felt it was necessary for environmental health officers to visit the site and gain further information before approving the second application.

Michael Willett (Con, Steyning) explained that both he and other local member Tim Lloyd supported the application in principle, but raised issues over drainage, the fact that there was no mention of the smoker unit in the application, and road safety.

He welcomed the offer of more fencing between the farm and the nearest property, as objectors had asked for measures to screen them from the various activities on site.

David Jesse explained how as a butcher he looked after animals on the farm, and also bought animals that were slaughtered at a local abattoir before being brought on to the site. He supplies local farm shops, pubs and restaurants.
