After going out to investigate the pair were attacked by a group of up to eight men in their 20s.

The older man suffered a hairline facial fracture and cuts that needed stitching.

Detective Constable Paul Tonks said: “This was a deliberate attack that had the potential for far more serious injury. The local area is small enough that someone will know about this, and we would ask them to come forward.”

Anyone who witnessed the incident or who has other information is asked to email [email protected] or phone 101, quoting serial 0015 of 6/12.
