Billingshurst Parish Council said contractors visiting the site warned damage to the Jubilee Fields ramps were so extensive they could cost thousands of pounds to repair.

A spokesman said: “Cost aside, parts of the sub-structure are so rotten, that there is nothing beneath to which attach new decking.

“Continuing costs to keep the facility, believed to be ten-years-old, open and safe to use have been behind the plan to replace the ramps with a new and larger facility, which featured a consultation with users last autumn, resulting in one very popular design being selected.

“This design is now being finalised and costed and it is hoped that this can be in place before the end of 2021.”

The Council has taken the ‘reluctant decision’ to remove the existing facility immediately which will means that there will be no skate park at the site for some months, the spokesman said.

He added: “If Covid restrictions are lifted in time, the Council will look into the feasibility of hiring in a temporary ramp for the summer holidays.”
