On Christmas Eve at 6pm everyone is being asked to go outside and ring a bell for two minutes ‘to spread Christmas spirit and to help Santa fly that sleigh.’

The initiative was started by a community in Harrogate but the idea has spread like wildfire and now nearly 400,000 people across the globe have pledged to take part.

And Craig Baines, who works in banking and lives in Haywards Heath, is hoping that people in Sussex will also join in with what is being dubbed ‘Worldwide Christmas Eve Jingle 2020.’

“What I want to achieve from this is for more people across the south east to be aware of what we are trying to achieve. Very much like we clapped for the NHS on a Thursday night, we want to ring those bells on Christmas Eve to bring back the magic of Christmas.”

After the bell-ringing, people can also take part in carol singing with songsheets available via a special Facebook page set up by organiser Mary Beggs-Reid. See https://fb.me/e/3MF6NdlX5Mary said: “After a tough year it would be an amazing memory for the kids and communities.

“End 2020 with a bit of magic, hope and togetherness!”
