Horsham’s oldest Scout group adapts sponsored walk to mark centenary - in pictures

Members of the 1st Roffey Scout Group have raised more than £1,500 after adapting a planned fundraiser to mark the club’s centenary.

On Sunday, June 14, when the group were set to do a 100-mile sponsored walk together around Horsham Park, 55 young members and adult volunteers managed to collectively walk 210 miles – excluding that completed by accompanying family members. Chris Sillett, group Scout leader, said: “This year 1st Roffey Scout Group is 100-years-old. We are the oldest continuously running Scout Group in Horsham and we had planned to celebrate in style. We had many events planned but the Covid–19 pandemic has meant most have had to be abandoned as we are unable to continue face-to-face meetings during the lockdown. One such event was a sponsored walk around Horsham Park with all young members walking laps to try and get to a total of 100 miles. We adapted it by asking our Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and adult volunteers to all go out in the morning with their families and walk at least two miles each to see if we could still walk 100 miles collectively. The response was amazing. Our target was £1,500 and by the day of the walk we had already raised over £1,200.” To sponsor the young walkers, visit https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/chris-sillett
