Residents were overjoyed as a real Christmas tree returned to Horsham town centre for the first time in years.

A group of businesses, traders and individuals who realised how popular previous trees were have joined together to provide a festive centre point for the town.

The tree will be a 25 foot tall cut Norway Spruce, hung with lights and baubles next to the stocks opposite Swan Walk.

It is hoped the tree will boost footfall for businesses and enhance the Christmas feel in town in the run up to the big day with festive events like carol singing.

Christmas isn’t just about rejoicing and having a good time, it is also about thinking of others.

The organisers would like the tree to be a springboard for a major public charitable donation campaign supporting St Catherine’s Hospice, Chestnut Tree House and Age UK Horsham District.

Everyone making a donation will have their name printed on the panels attached to the picket fence at the base of the tree.

The intention is that donors will look for their names and take photographs.

All this would not have been possible without the sponsors Lello Business, AToM, Wakefields Jewellers, The Rotary Club of Horsham, Swan Walk, The District Post, Visit Horsham, Byjove Media, Mansell McTaggert, South East Hearing Care Centres, Henfield Hire, Mancini Legal, Slinfold Gold and Country Club, The Horsham Mortgage Centre, Muffin Break, Mungo’s Bar, Fresh Traditions, Cote Brasserie, Piries Bar, Bill’s Restaurant, Set4Success and Mia Philips Therapy.

The project is run on a not for profit basis, the costs are privately underwritten.

Organiser Ben Hewson said he wanted to give a big thank you to Horsham District Council, who ‘kindly lent time and resources to enable the project to happen’.
