Over the week beginning August 10, the teenagers gathered 186kg of food donations from shops and businesses during the peak of the heatwave.

They were supporting Horsham District Foodbank, which is ran by the Trussell Trust, as part of the National Citizen Service’s (NCS) ‘Keep Doing Good’ (KDG) project.

Paula Daly, community fundraiser at Horsham District Foodbank, was amazed by the result and told the youngsters: “The amount of food you all dropped off at the foodbank last week was 186kg, which is a massive amount to have carried to us in a heatwave.

“That equates to 442 meals which will feed a family of four for 37 days! Just think, you have fed a family, for over a month, that’s really amazing.’

KDG is a two week long programme and aims to help young people aged 15-17 to complete ‘One Million Hours of Doing Good’ across July and August.

Participants had the opportunity to volunteer in food banks, charity shops, care homes, and other local community projects.
