The etched plaque, bearing the rainbow now synonymous with Covid-19, also contained the signatures of all 60 pupils at Heron Way Primary School who have enjoyed seven weeks of full time learning in school from Monday, June 1, right through to term end on Friday, July 17.

“The idea of giving something back to the school to show our appreciation was unanimous amongst the parents”, said mum Cora Sweatman.

”The school has been amazing. Teachers set virtual learning lessons every day throughout lockdown, and were well prepared to welcome our children back to school into their bubbles, minimising any anxiety of returning to classrooms very different to the ones they left back in March.

“They even went above and beyond to give our year-six’s the very best end of an era send off considering the circumstances. So this was the least we could do!”

Team captains Caitlin Milligan, Arthur Keefe-Smith, Ted Jacobs, Maddie Lendon, Lyndon Fielder, Georgie Durham, Eve McManus and Oliver Chamberlain handed over the 45cm wide plaque, during their special socially distanced leavers send off, which involved a speech from headteacher James Crump and a live rendition of ‘We are the Heron Way 2020’ to the tune of Summer of ‘69.

James Crump said: “Both my staff and myself were extremely touched to receive the plaque; it is such a stunning reminder of the appreciation our parents have shown.

“It will have pride of place in the Learning Hub, in the heart of the school, where it will serve as a piece of history and a poignant reminder of the challenges faced by pupils and teachers during the coronavirus crisis. It signifies the incredible team ethic that brought our school community even closer. In the darkest of times, our community continued to shine.”
