Fraser Labate, who is a year four pupil at Holbrook Primary School, won the West Sussex Writing Competition: Finding the Right Words in his age category for his entry ‘The Eagles’.

Ian Holmes, headteacher at Holbrook Primary, said: “Only one poet from each of the three age groups was selected as a winner so it is an impressive achievement.

“The judges thought his poem was well-considered; being full of action, excitement and really capturing the imagination.

“His use of language was effective as he used precise vocabulary and really built a strong image in the mind. They were impressed with lines like –’she leaps off like a feathery torpedo’ and ‘her prey wriggling, writhing and weakening in her clasping blades’.

“Fraser has won an illustrated version of his poem and a box of beautiful poetry/nature based books for the school. Congratulations and thank you Fraser!”
