Horsham Community Speedwatch (CSW) work with the police and community to educate drivers in a bid to reduce their speeds.

CSW is a national initiative where active members of communities join with the support of the police to monitor speeds of vehicles using speed detection devices.

Vehicles over the speed limit are referred to the police with the aim of educating drivers to reduce their speeds, the group said. In cases where education is blatantly ignored and evidence of repeat or excessive offences is collated (now across county borders); enforcement and prosecution follow.

Horsham Speedwatch co-ordinator Graham Sitton added: “Neighbourhood Policing Panels support speedwatch schemes as they may assist them to more easily achieve their goals.

Volunteers receive appropriate training, and are supported by neighbourhood policing team staff.

“The scheme aims to cater for the problem of real or perceived speed related offending, and through partnership with the community it is used in circumstances that are necessary, justifiable and proportionate in order to: reduce death and injury on the roads, improve the quality of life for local communities, reduce the speed of vehicles to the speed limit and increase public awareness of inappropriate speed.”

Not all places are suitable for CSW to function and the sites where CSW operates are designated by police as appropriate, he added.

Graham said: “Speedwatch activity is not about interfering with behaviour; it is a proactive solution to improve the safety and quality of life for everyone in the town.

“Horsham Community Speedwatch is looking for volunteers to operate sessions in Kings Road, Harwood Road, Comptons Lane, St. Leonards Road, and Brighton Road.

“You need access to the internet and be over 18. Police are occasionally in attendance or close by.”

Road Safety Week is running from November 16 to 22. This year the theme is ‘no need to speed’.
