Dr Lodwick said despite ‘the initial upheaval and the recent uncertainty’ around the GCSE grades, both staff, students and parents are absolutely delighted to be celebrating exceptional performance, in a year like no other.

She added: “High attainment and high achievement, both of which are above the national average, reflects the tremendous hard work and commitment of the students and staff over many years.

“Attainment 8 demonstrates that our students achieved an average of 59 which is equivalent to grade 6 (good B pass) across their 8 best subject results.

“It is likely that the Progress 8 result will be 0.86 which means that the cohort achieved more than three quarters of a grade above national expectation in each of their best 8 subjects on average.”

In the core subjects, 88 per cent of students achieved a standard pass (grade 4 or above) in both English Language and Mathematics and 68 per cent achieved a strong pass (grade 5 or above) which are both well above the national average.

Dr Lodwick added: “At Millais 89 per cent of the cohort are entered for English Baccalaureate (EBacc) subjects which forms a distinctive feature of our curriculum offer, especially as EBacc entries are only at 37 per cent nationally. “This year 40 per cent of our students achieved strong passes in English and Maths, in Science, a modern language and History or Geography and the average points score for EBacc subjects was 5.48 which is above the national score.

“The remarkable achievement across all subjects is reflected in the 36 per cent of the cohort achieving the equivalent of five or more grades at 7,8 and 9 which is tremendous and well above the national average figure of 27 per cent.” Among the top five students with the highest number of GCSEs at grade 9 are Valentina Velasco with a total of 11, Miranda Wilson and Rebecca Holland with 10 grades at this level and Catherine Adkin and Laura Dampier who each were awarded a total of 9 of the very top grades, she said.

Dr Lodwick added: “Every year we endeavour to live up to the reputation we have established for ourselves as one of the highest performing (non-selective) state schools in the country and despite the trauma of this particular year these results remain exceptional and really reflect our pursuit of excellence.

“We are extremely proud of each one of our year 11 students as they have been truly rewarded for their hard work and commitment which they have demonstrated over a number of years and we wish them every success as they move on now with confidence to the next stage of their education.”
